The sun, our light/life force representing our ego drive and our will, entered the mutable earth sign of VIRGO on August 22, 2013 at 7:02pm eastern. Virgo is the sixth sign of the zodiac marking the final sign of our personal exploration with the world before we emerge into the outer world in Libra by connecting with ‘other’. This is the only mutable earth sign, and is one of the four mutable energies sharing company, or conflict for that matter, with Gemini, Sagittarius, and Pisces. Mutable signs are the changeable, adjustable, and fluid energy signs in the quadroplicities that “change” the seasons from their fixed nature and prepare for the shift into the cardinal nature for the start of the following season. Virgo is one of the three earth signs sharing this grounded, practical, realistic, and third-dimensional experience of existence with Taurus and Capricorn.
The glyph of Virgo is in the “M” shape with a loop or infinity symbol at the end. The “M” is representative of Mother Earth or Mother Mary, and also suggests “Material” like the tangible earth, the element of the sign. The loop or sometimes infinity sign implies the sacred feminine and purity as well as the flow of mental introspection toward the soul. The feminine purity of this Virgo energy holds the archetype of The Virgin.
This feminine purity is the yin energy of cleanliness, service, and healthy duty to the body and it’s ability to produce life beyond itself while honoring the perfection of the soul in an imperfect earthly incarnation; a dilemma familiar to Virgos. This dilemma of seeking perfection in an imperfect world is a projection of many Virgo-types to the world outside of themselves, and especially to those they care for most. These external projections are perceived as criticism and nit-picking, while to the Virgo is seen as caring gestures of service, duty, and responsibility to improve the world around them and help the “less fortunate” (all other sun signs) to improve themselves and therefore create a better world for all.
The Virgo male with this feminine purity projects that with a keen eye for their own sense of perfection of self and often prefers a mate that emulates this virgin archetype. He may prefer a woman that will accept his criticisms and seeks the improvements of self he readily suggests.
The Virgo female, although radiates her feminine purity, also gives off an underlying sexual curiosity that entices others in wonderment of her potentials for impurity.
While there is on-going debate with in the astrological community as to the best planetary ruler with attributed myth for Virgo, Mercury or Hermes is still the decided ruler. Mercury is the androgynous planet of mental and mechanical communication moving quickly around the sun as quickly within the self. Virgo is known for their analytical minds and attention to details. Their hyper-analytics may bring about anxiety and for some, obsessive-compulsive behaviors, especially for their germaphobic nature.
The quick wit of this mercurial sign has its way with humor as well as mental trickery, making for the Virgo as one to reckon with in a verbal debate. This is a sign that does not handle blame that well and can dish far superior than it can take. (I know this b/c my sister is a b*tch).
Virgos… you always know you’re speaking with one as they nit-pick ever detail of your being with their eyes while they stand proudly in their designer perfectly pressed shirt offering their services to improve you. The virgin beauty of perfection… that’s Virgo.
